This study integrates an account of the federal government's role in Canadian forestry, emphasizing its contribution to the science and technology of fire protection, inventory, and sylviculture, with a broader analysis of forest management in Canada. By linking the evolution of federal policy to a history of the organization now known as the Canadian Forest Service, and relating this political-institutional focus to the process of innovation in the above fields, this study seeks to contribute to the understanding of forest exploitation and conservation.
