Contrary to the Canadian car industry which quickly became dominated by American interests, Canadian fire truck manufacturers are still very much in business. The fact they are still active contradicts the historiographic interpretation whereby we, in Canada, have lost our industry and technology to foreign subsidiaries. How can this discrepancy between these two industry sectors be explained? In this study, the author argues that the fire truck manufacturing industry survived because it is highly specialized. This study deals mainly with the three companies that dominated the Canadian market in this industry sector between 1945 and 1965: LaFrance, Bickle/Bickle-Seagrave/King Seagrave and Camions Pierre Thibault.
